What's New at Banville Wine Merchants

Montecappone on Vinous - New Marche Releases

From the article: "New Releases from the Marche: Life Beyond Verdicchio?" (Feb 2018) by Ian D'Agata

"The Mirizzi family recently bought a new, roughly 10-hectare site near Montecarotto, an area of the Castelli di Jesi denomination that has very different soils than those of Cupramontana (the former are mainly clay-sandy and less calcareous than those of the latter), and they plan to make another, new Verdicchio Riserva (to be aged in large oak barrels) from organic grapes only. Mirizzi planted about four hectares to go along with the two hectares of 15-year-old vines already planted on the site. Other news relative to this family is that they continue to be owners of the Enoteca Bomprezzi, one of Rome's oldest and best. Their lineup of wines this year seemed to be especially successful to me, including the best Sauvignon Blanc they have ever made."

Montecappone Utopia Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva 2014

92+ points "Crystalline pale straw-green. Flinty nuances complement orchard and stone fruit aromas and flavors. Very dense and almost shut down, this brooding, multilayered wine finishes long and clean, with lingering peach and minty apple notes. This is a single-vineyard wine made from 40-year-old vines grown in the cool-climate area of Cupramontana. 14 percent alcohol." -I.D.

Montecappone Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico 2016

91 points "Pale straw-green. Very intense aromas of passion fruit and grapefruit on the bright, captivating nose. Then crisp, juicy and saline, with a glyceral mouthfeel but also lively lemony and orchard fruit flavors that linger impressively. Outstanding entry-level Verdicchio that will appeal to those Sauvignon Blanc lovers who might not yet know Verdicchio. 13.5 percent alcohol." -I.D.
