A FAMILY'S LEGACY
Pier Luigi Tolaini left his home in Italy at the age of 19, fueled by a dream to make enough money to one day return to Tuscany and create exceptional wines. After finding success in North America, he returned to Tuscany in 1998, purchased land in the prestigious Castelnuovo Berardenga region of Chianti Classico, and founded TOLAINI WINERY. For 22 years, he passionately crafted award-winning Tuscan wines with his daughter Lia. Pier Luigi passed away in 2020, and today, alongside her 3 children—Alex, Ali and Matteo—Lia carries on the delicate balance of tradition and innovation, continuing to transform her father's dreams into Tolaini's enduring legacy.
COMMITTED TO ORGANIC VITICULTURE & RESPONSIBLE LAND STEWARDSHIP
In 2023, with the guidance of consulting agronomist Ruggero Mazzilli, a pioneer in organic viticulture, the Tolaini estate received official organic certification from the EU and also achieved carbon-neutral status. Tolaini's approach to viticulture is meticulous, with each grape variety matched to its ideal microclimate through extensive soil and exposure studies. The estate's 50 hectares of vineyards, planted in 2000, sit between 300-450 meters above sea level. This elevation provides significant diurnal temperature variation, contributing to the wines' freshness and elegance.
WINEMAKING: TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION
Francesco Rosi is Tolaini's head winemaker and director of production. After12 years at Tolaini working with top consultants (Michel Rolland and Luca D'Attoma), Francesco is now solely in charge of the winemaking team. His approach balances respect for tradition with modern precision. A recent expansion of the cellar, adding 14 concrete tanks, underscores Tolaini's commitment to terroir expression. These vessels, chosen for their neutral character and porous nature, allow for gentle extraction and pure fruit expression. The cellar is equipped with state-of-the-art temperature and humidity control systems, ensuring optimal conditions throughout the winemaking process.
THE WINES: SHOWCASING THE EXCELLENCE OF CASTELNUOVO BERARDENGA
The Tolaini portfolio is a testament to the diversity of terroir and wine styles that are representative of Castelnuovo Berardenga, Chianti Classico's southernmost commune. Vallenuova Chianti Classico and Vigna Montebello Sette Chianti Classico Gran Selezione showcase Sangiovese at its finest - structured, elegant, and deeply expressive with a distinct sense of place. The estate's IGT wines demonstrate the Tolaini team's skill with international varieties. Valdisanti, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, offers power and finesse. Picconero, a 100% Merlot produced only in top vintages, is a bold, concentrated wine that ages beautifully. A notable addition to the portfolio is PERLUI, a limited-production wine dedicated to Pier Luigi. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc, his favorite variety, PERLUI represents the realization of Pier Luigi's dream of making the best wines possible in this distinct terroir. As Lia and her family continue to invest in innovation and strive for excellence, Tolaini's wines consistently offer a compelling blend of power and elegance, true to their Castelnuovo Berardenga origins. Pier Luigi would indeed be proud.
