Côte de Nuits, France

Domaine Gavignet-Béthanie

The story of Domaine Gavignet-Béthanie is first and foremost a family tale. On one side were the Gavignets, winemakers in Burgundy's Nuits-Saint-Georges for three generations, and on the other, the Béthanies, who have been making wine in the region for more than 70 years.
In the 1970s, Christian Gavignet worked first with his father, known as "Gaby", winemaker at the Hospices de Nuits, and then with his brother on the family estate. At the same time, Marcel Béthanie was getting ready to retire and he handed his hectares of vines over to his daughter Michèle. When Michèle and Christian married, the Gavignet-Béthanie estate was created. In 1968, their daughter Christine was born, and five years later, another daughter, Claire, arrived.
In the 1980s Christine began winemaking school in Beaune and after graduating with a winegrowing and enology diploma, she went to work on the estate with her father both in the vineyards and the cellar. Claire ultimately joined her sister and together they began to explore new techniques in the vineyard and the cellar, all while maintaining a consistent level of tradition. 2001 was the sisters' first vintage and since 2003, after the death of Christian, they have run the winery together with the help of their mother, husbands and now their own children.
The sisters farm their vineyards using lutte raisonnée (sustainable and minimal intervention) farming practices.

The wines of the Gavignet-Béthanie estate are elegant and refined. They are aged in oak - part new, part old - for 12 to 18 months depending on the wine and the vintage, and are then bottled on site at Nuits-Saint-Georges by Christine and Claire. The wines rest on average for two years before release.
