Tolaini

Pier Luigi Tolaini left his home in Italy at the age of 19, fueled by a dream to make enough money to one day return to Tuscany and create exceptional wines. After finding success in North America, he returned to Tuscany in 1998, purchased land in the prestigious Castelnuovo Berardenga region of Chianti Classico, and founded Tolaini Winery. For 22 years, he passionately crafted top-notch Tuscan wines with his daughter Lia. Pier Luigi passed away in 2020, and today, alongside her 3 children—Alex, Ali and Matteo—Lia carries on the delicate balance of tradition and innovation, continuing to transform her father's dreams into Tolaini's enduring legacy.
Ruggero Mazzilli is Tolaini's consulting agronomist and is based in Gaiole in Chianti where he is the owner and founder of SPEVIS (The Experimental Station for Sustainable Viticulture). Under Ruggero's supervision Panzano in Chianti became the first Bio-Distretto (Organic District) in the world, immediately followed by San Gimignano and Gaiole in Chianti. SPEVIS works with the best scientific research institutes to find new solutions to practical vineyard issues by following the principles of organic agriculture and respectful environmental practices. With Ruggero as part of the team, Tolaini continues to cultivate the maximum expression of Chianti Classico terroir while farming organically and sustainably. Tolaini received official organic certification in the EU in 2023.
Francesco Rosi is Tolaini's head winemaker and director of production. After 12 years at Tolaini working with top consultants (Michel Rolland and Luca D'Attoma), Francesco is now solely in charge of the winemaking team.  In 2023, Lia and her family expanded Tolaini's cellar, adding 14 concrete tanks - an additional 700 hl. Concrete is a traditional fermentation vessel that has been used for centuries due to its neutral character and porous surface. At Tolaini, the focus is on making wines that reflect the distinct characteristics of Castelnuovo Berardenga, and these new concrete tanks play a pivotal role in achieving this terroir-focused approach.
Tolaini wines are known internationally for their impeccable quality and incredible taste. With each new vintage they continue to innovate and impress.
