Bodegas Sierra Salinas
Alicante, Spain

Bodegas Sierra Salinas was founded in 2003 by the Castaño family of Yecla due to their desire to explore the highest altitude terroirs of Alicante. In 2013, the estate was purchased by the Miñano Gomez family of MG Wines. After acquiring the estate, they began conversion toward organic farming and regrafting all of the estate's international varieties to massal selections of Monastrell sourced from their oldest vineyards.
The winery is named for the Sierra Salinas - a small mountain range that runs north to south near the village of Villena, the highest altitude of Alicante, located at 650-680M above sea level. Here, in the foothills of the Sierra, the soils are incredibly shallow and dominated by limestone and solid blocks of calcium carbonate. This terroir produces a characteristically "sunny" and generous style of Monastrell, yet one with a unique freshness, minerality, and classic Mediterranean garrigue.
Sierra Salinas controls 90 Ha. of vineyards - 80 of which are estate owned and 10 of which are leased on long-term contract. The Monastrell triangle of Alicante - Jumilla - Yecla is generally dominated by co-ops and large producers buying bulk fruit and wine. In contrast, Sierra Salinas is one of the few producers that are 100% estate grown and bottled. These unique Monastrells combine this variety's trademark fruit concentration and generous character with bright acidity and classic Mediterranean garrigue notes of rosemary, oregano, and thyme.
