Mestizo Mezcal

Mestizo Mezcal

Mestizo Mezcal is an ancient spirit that is unique because of its distinctive, complex and aromatic flavors.  Mezcal was produced centuries ago by the Zapotec tribe in Mexico, and was considered to be a gift from the goddess Mayahuel.  In the 16th century, the Spanish introduced a specialized distillation process to the Zapotec tribe that was used to improve the ancient beverage.  Today, the founders of Mestizo Mezcal works with its producers from the Mexican state of Oaxaca to further define and enrich the taste of their product and create a perfect convergence of cultures within each bottle.

Mestizo is a perfect one-word description of how mezcal was created. That is because Mestizo originates from the Latin mixticĭus, meaning mixed, and was used by the Spanish to refer to the mixing of the European and indigenous Mexican people.   Mezcal as we know it today is also a mix of two cultures: the octli (fermented maguey juice), which was the beverage produced in Mexico thousands of years ago by fermenting agave plants, and the distillation process through the alambique that the Spanish learned in the 8th century from the Moors and introduced to the Zapotecs and other indigenous civilizations in the 16th century to improve and strengthen the octli.  So mezcal is in fact the first MESTIZO spirit of America, and that is why the founders decided to name their mezcal Mestizo as a commemoration of what mezcal is all about: a mix of cultures.
