Domaine J-L & F Chavy
Burgundy, France
Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy: The Chavy family have lived in Puligny-Montrachet for over 200 years and have participated in the wine trade for much of that time. 1n 1986 Gérard Chavy began bottling the wines from their estate under the Chavy name. Previously, the wines had been sold to negociants. After Gérard's death, his son Jean-Louis created his own estate in 2004. He now shares parcels of Bourgogne Blanc, Puligny-Montrachet, and Charmes with his brother, Alain, as well as Premier Cru vines in Champs Gain, Clavoillons, and Folatières.
Jean-Louis also owns the Premier Cru site, Perrières, on his own. His holdings total almost 7 hectares. Jean-Louis makes his wines from old (20-40+ years) vines with a restrained use of oak. The Premier Cru vineyards are located mostly north of the world-famous Montrachet Grand Crus. Those located higher on the hill yield more structured, flinty mineral wines, while those lower down (like Clavoillons) closer to the Grand Crus tend to be richer and rounder.
