Pierre Meurgey

Burgundy, France

Pierre Meurgey

In a region where every parcel of land is extremely coveted, it's not just about what you know but who you know. Pierre Meurgey has spent the last 35 years building an extensive network of landowners, vineyard managers, and winemakers, giving him unique access to some of the best vineyards and terroirs Burgundy has to offer.

A native of Burgundy, Pierre Meurgey is a fourth-generation wine trader and winemaker with a relentless passion for the region and his climats. Half winemaker, half negociant, Pierre perfectly exemplifies what micro-negoce is all about. He works very closely with his partners at every step of the way in order to create the expressive, terroir-driven wines that make up his two lines of Burgundy wines. His Pierre Meurgey wines focus on the Cote d'Or terroirs, while his Meurgey-Croses wines (named as a tribute to his mother Marie-Thérèse Croses) focus on the Mâconnais terroirs.

Terroir Expression & Purity: Pierre's focus is on showcasing Burgundy's terroirs and climates, preserving a sense of place as opposed to creating a homogenized, 'cookie-cutter' winemaking style with his signature on it.

Sustainable Practices: Pierre only works with growers who share his vision of meticulous care and respect in the vineyard. He practices organic and biodynamic viticulture (depending on vineyard sites) coupled with minimal intervention in the vineyards and cellar.

Hybrid negociant & winemaker profile: From pruning to bud-break to harvest, Pierre is omnipresent in the vineyards and directly oversees the plots destined to become his signature wines. In the cellar, he is the sole decision maker.

Master of Wine Clive Coates once wrote that a feature of Meurgey wines is the total absence of a Meurgey Signature. In a region where 'terroir' is paramount, this may be one of the highest compliments one can receive and a testament to the value of preserving a sense of place.
